PlanMapper: An Internet-based and Spatially Referenced Land-use Planning, Searching, Communications, and Reporting Tool

The complexity of land-use plans and related resource information found among government, industry, and research institutions in British Columbia demands a more effective way to access planning information and related data.

This project will design, develop, and release a freely available, on-line location-based (“geospatial”) decision-support system that will enable users to search for land-use planning information within their area of interest. The system will also enable users to view the extent of a particular plan, and read the content of a plan, as well as link to other types of related resource data and information.

The PlanMapper on-line system, hosted by the University of Northern B.C., will use open-source software, and conform to the data standards endorsed for the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI). This compliance with the CGDI will enable agencies with related data, plans, or map layers to link their information to the PlanMapper system.

The first phase of PlanMapper development will focus on an interior region of B.C. and will be of particular value to the Omineca Beetle Action Coalition, a group of mayors and community leaders addressing the socio-economic impacts of the mountain pine beetle epidemic.
