Canada Lands
Discussions held during the Second National Coordination Meeting in April 1999 has identified the administrative boundaries as a targeted layer for framework Data. In order to integrate the administrative boundaries of Canada Lands and contribute to the establishment of the Administrative Boundaries Framework Data Layer, Legal Surveys Division (LSD) proposes a 2-phase approach. The long-term objective is to give broad access, through the CGDI, to LSD's administrative boundary data on Canada Lands, more specifically the administrative boundaries of Indian Reserves and National Parks. As a first step, LSD needs to obtain a better understanding of the issues associated with this integration. LSD will investigate issues such as: compatibility with existing Framework Data requirements; vertical alignment, format conversion, completeness and data quality. Data content and structure, and semantics and metadata. A clear description of theses issues will enable LSD to formulate an implementation plan for phase 2 and ensure the successful integration of these administrative boundaries into the Framework Data Layer.
To complete Phase 1, LSD will be familiar with the Framework Data requirements. The detailed characteristics that the Canada Lands data should have to be compliant with Framework Data will have been determined. Mechanisms to complete the administrative boundaries of Canada Lands will also have been identified. The basis of partnerships between different agencies that could contribute to the improvement of Canada Lands data will also be identified. A work plan that will describe all the issues to be resolved to reach the long-term objectives will be prepared.
The project will be carried out during the month of March 2000 with a total budget of $32,818. The financial contribution required from GeoConnections is $16,400 (50%).
The outcome of this project will provide the basis for initiating discussions with users, government departments, partners and the Geomatics industry on the issues regarding the successful integration of Canada Lands administrative boundaries (Indian Reserves and National Parks) into the Framework Data Layer.
