Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED) 2007–2008

This project will contribute toward completing coverage of Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED) for Canada’s North. By combining satellite images with satellite radar data, the project will produce CDED that is consistent with national standards and CDED product specifications. Specifically, this project will produce 275 data sets at the scale of 1:50,000 for Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

People who live and work in northern Canada require the same high quality of CDED as those who live and work in the country’s more southerly locations. This project will ensure that Canadians throughout the country enjoy the same high-quality CDED.

Employed largely to produce maps, CDED are used by a variety of persons and organizations in both the public and private sectors. In the North, these applications include Maritime transport, Northwest Passage mapping, climate change monitoring, sustainable development, wildlife conservation, energy and natural resource development, and mineral exploration.

The project involves collecting data about rivers, streams, and lakes and other topographic features. This data is then processed to produce contour lines that describe the altitudes of features on topographical maps.

The data produced under this project will contribute to the completion of the CDED layer of the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI). Northern communities, including First Nations, will benefit from this project by being able to make better decisions about their social, economic, and environmental development.
