Watersheds Information Exchange

The Watersheds InfoXchange (WIX) is an online application that enables watershed stakeholders such as community organizations and citizen scientists, as well as federal, provincial, and municipal governments, to input, view, and analyze water-quality information. This information can be used to protect the inland water resources essential to the health and well-being of Canadian communities.

The Centre for Sustainable Watersheds (CSW) is developing WIX in partnership with GeoConnections. WIX will enable citizens to monitor the environment, collect environmental data, and share it with government agencies through the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI). WIX will also offer online data analysis. Built on open-source software, WIX is designed to be cost effective for other community networks such as CSW to deploy. (Open- source software is built and improved over time by a community of users and developers. Anyone can upgrade the software or create new applications as long as these improvements are made available to everyone else for free.) WIX illustrates how the CGDI is empowering citizens and communities by enabling them to access and apply geospatial information.
