Development of a Water Resource Mapping Portal
This project will create a web portal that enables residents, municipal planners, and researchers in Chelsea, Quebec, to map and graph water quality and water quantity data in real time and thereby influence water management in their community.
Each year, the University of Ottawa issues a report to inform Chelsea municipal planners, council, and residents about the community's water quality and quantity. This report is prepared on behalf of H2O Chelsea, a volunteer-based water-monitoring group. Because the report's data is stored in a database, many end-users cannot easily access the data.
The web-based Water Resource Mapping Portal will resolve this access problem by enabling users to search the portal to check the quality of well water, streams, rivers, and lakes in the area. The public will also be able to search areas of interest by postal code, map sheet number, watershed, and place names. These data and services are made available through the project's use of the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI).
The technical foundation of the project is the Watersheds InfoXchange (WIX) for Eastern Ontario, an existing CGDI compliant web-mapping system.
